Hats are worn for practical reasons. Rain, sun and snow - you will wear an appropriate hat to protect your head against the onslaught of these natural forces that may damage your noggin. You wear a hat in the summer to shield your face from the sun's ultraviolet rays but in the rain, you probably wear a hat to avoid ruining your hair and makeup.
